Austriamicrosystems has developed two new RFID reader chips combining low power operation, small size, and low cost to enable RFID implementation in embedded portable and consumer devices.
The AS3993 and AS3980 both operate at very low power (75 mA on a supply voltage of 3.3 V), which means these RFID reader ICs are well suited for use in portable and battery-powered equipment such as mobile phones.
The AS3980 removes certain functions, such as support for Dense Reader Mode and Direct Mode, which makes it an ideal candidate for cost-constrained consumer applications such as the authentication of branded consumables.
In addition, the RFID chips deliver very high sensitivity of -90 dBm while providing high immunity to the effects of antenna reflections and self-jamming, vital in mobile and embedded applications.
