Aussie nursing home introduces RFID to care giving
PresCare, an Australian aged-care service provider, has built a $30 million facility in Queensland that uses RFID technology to assist staff members in their care of the elderly.
The facility, known as Vela, features an RFID system used to track the real-time position of their residents within a 3-meter proximity. This is to avoid a situation in which residents are left stranded and calling for help after a fall.
Under the system, developed by Queensland communications company SureCom, residents and key staff wear RFID wristbands or necklaces, which are monitored by a number of sensors set up throughout the facility.
The system not only tracks residents in need of help, but also tells which staff member responds to distress calls.
PresCare is currently using RFID technology in three of its six sites and hopes to expand the system to the entire organization, as well as refine the technology to include blood pressure and pulse rate reading capabilities.
