The Auckland Council is looking to standardize the technology used to track and manage library book stocks across its thirty three libraries and collection centers using RFID technology, according to Computerworld.

The council currently issues more than 10 million books every year. Transferring books and managing stock across regional boundaries becomes difficult due to conflicting management systems and identification technologies.

Three of the previous library systems – Manukau City, Rodney District, and Papakura District – already use RFID, while another three use an older form of book identification based on magnetic tags and barcodes. Libraries in Waitakere use a mixture of both technologies.

The Auckland Council is seeking potential vendors to provide the common system for tagging and managing book stock, including door security units for theft prevention, staff work stations, and self service check out desks.
