New Hampshire-based 2D-3D facial-recognition technology developer Animetrics Inc. introduced a server-based facial recognition technology which uses biometrics to enhance and improve the facial resolution in photos or video surveillance footage, reports Mass High Tech.

The software application, called ForensicaGPS, is geared toward law enforcement and intelligence agencies to help them better identify suspects. The software can create a 3D image from facial and partial facial features, which can then be inputted into facial recognition systems. The enhanced images can produce more positive matches.

The software’s biometric algorithms use facial measurements that can work around disguises and recreate an image of the face by placing features like eyes, noses and chins where they ideally should be located. The resulting image helps officers have more accurate images from grainy evidence.

Animetrics is licensing its software to agencies around the world, including in Switzerland and the Middle East. It is also in negotiations with a large police department in the eastern U.S.
