Ambiq Technology has signed an agreement with the St. Petersburg Transportation Authority to provide products and services based on its proprietary NFC mobile payment platform.

The St. Petersburg Metro has already begun testing Ambiq’s solution, which lets passengers use mobile phones to buy tickets for public transit.

According to Ambiq, the system utilizes secure element NFC devices from Ambiq that are installed in standard mobile phones. The devices are designed to work with the existing Metro turnstiles and ground transport readers, and connect directly to the City’s ticket management system.

“The technology offered by Ambiq Technology is of interest to St. Petersburg because it simplifies the procedure of buying tickets and paying for transfer in public transport for passengers in St. Petersburg. We know that this solution will be in demand among citizens and guests of the city,” said S.V. Popov, Deputy Chairman of the Transportation Authority.

St. Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia and has over four million daily public transportation riders. According to Ambiq, this transportation system deployment is the first step in implementing Ambiq’s greater unified services platform, Secure-Z.

Misha Rozenberg, Ambiq’s CEO, explains: “In the future, residents and visitors of St. Petersburg will be able to pay for meals, taxi rides, store purchases, public transportation – all from their mobile phone over our secure platform.”
